Guardian is a mutual company. How is that different from non-mutual companies?
Guardian is the fourth-largest mutual life insurance company in America. We are proud of our mutual status, because it's a powerful difference between Guardian and many other financial services companies. Our total focus is on the care and well-being of our policyowners — not Wall Street.Stock companies may be under pressure to maintain short-term earnings to please investors and the markets, and are often swayed by the "conventional wisdom" of the moment. At Guardian, we plan and manage for the long term rather than simply for the immediate. We work hard to ensure our financial strength so that the promises we make to you now will be met in the future. As a result, we have been able to consistently provide low costs on ordinary life coverage, while maintaining an outstanding record of dividends year in, year out.
First Commonwealth Dental Questions
How does a member select a dentist?
Each member and his/her family members may select a dentist from our provider directory. To create a customized provider directory based on location, language, specialty and much more, go to the homepage. Under "Resources", click on "Doctors/Dentists/Facilities" and then "Create a Customized Directory."
Can I stay with my current dentist?
Only a select number of dental practices are contracted with FCW DHMO. To see if your dentist participates, refer to your participating Dental HMO directory or call Member Services at 1-866-494-4542.
Can each family member select a different dentist or dental office?
Yes, each member and his/her dependents may receive care from different dentists or dental offices.
Can a member change dentists for any reason?
Yes. To change dentists, you should contact Member Services by the 15th of any month to select another available affiliated general dental practice. The change is effective the first of the following month.
What if my dentist is not on your list of participating dental offices? Can he or she join?
Talk with your dentist. If he or she is interested, you can nominate him by going to homepage. Under "Resources", click on Doctors/Dentists/Facilities. We will be happy to provide him with information regarding the First Commonwealth plan. If your dentist meets our criteria, he will be encouraged to participate.
What payment is due at the time of service?
A copayment for the service rendered is due. You can refer to your schedule of member responsibilities for copayments related to various services.

What do I do if I have a dental emergency?
You should contact your DHMO primary care dentist. If you are unable to reach the dentist, you may contact FCW's Member Services Department.
If you are out of the area (more than fifty miles from your general dentist) you should in all cases seek emergency treatment from any dentist as soon as possible to alleviate the emergency condition only.
